Managing DIDs

A DID is a phone number assigned to a client. Assigning, releasing, and deactivating a number each have a distinct, stated effect.

The three actions

Assign
Attach an available number to a client. Inbound calls to it route to that client, and its monthly fee begins.
Release
Detach a number from its client. The client stops being billed for it and the number returns to the unassigned pool, ready to assign again.
Deactivate
Retire a number entirely. It can no longer be assigned to any client. This cannot be undone.

Assigning a number

  1. Open the clientGo to the client that should own the number.
  2. Add the DIDAssign an available number from the pool.
  3. Confirm routingInbound calls to the number now reach that client. Its monthly fee starts this period.

Releasing a number

Releasing is confirmed before it takes effect, and the confirmation names the exact number and its client. After release:

  • Inbound calls to the number stop routing to the former client.
  • Billing for the number stops; the current invoice still reflects service already received.
  • The number returns to the unassigned pool.
Deactivation is permanent. A deactivated number cannot be re-assigned. Release instead if you only want to move a number between clients.
